fundam a efêmera e ruidosa Rex Gallery & Sons.

por sua necessidade de perceber o inconsciente;

sempre tive e tenho muitas saudades dele

Mark Rothko - 1903 – 1970

Mark Rothko was born in Dvinsk.
His father, Jacob, was a pharmacist and an intellectual
who provided his children with a secular and political
rather than religious upbringing.

Unlike Jews in most cities of Czarist Russia
those in Dvinsk had been spared from violent outbreak of anti-Semitic pogroms.
However in an environment where Jews
were often blamed for many of the evils that befell Russia
Rothko’s early childhood was plagued with fear.
Fearing that his sons were about to be drafted into the Czarist army
Jacob Rothkowitz decided to emigrate from Russia to the United States.

1. A picture lives by companionship
expanding and quickening in the eyes of the sensitive observer.
It dies by the same token.
It is therefore a risky and unfeeling act to send it out into the world.
How often it must be permanently impaired by the eyes of the vulgar
and the cruelty of the impotent who would extend the affliction universally.
2. I am not an abstract painter. I am not interested in the relationship between form and color. The only thing I care about is the expression of man's basic emotions: tragedy, ecstasy, destiny.
3. Certain people always say we should go back to nature. I notice they never say we should go forward to nature.
4. Pictures must be miraculous.
5. The progression of a painter's work as it travels in time from point to point will be toward clarity. Toward the elimination of all obstacles between the painter and the idea and the idea and the observer.

In the June 13, 1943 edition of the New York Times, Rothko, together with Adolph Gottlieb and Barnett Newman, published the following brief manifesto:

1. To us art is an adventure into an unknown world which can be explored only by those willing to take the risks.
2. This world of imagination is fancy-free and violently opposed to common sense.
3. It is our function as artists to make the spectator see the world our way not his way.
4. We favor the simple expression of the complex thought. We are for the large shape because it has the impact of the unequivocal. We wish to reassert the picture plane. We are for flat forms because they destroy illusion and reveal truth.
5. Silence is so accurate.

Saul Steinberg

Saul Steinberg was born in Romania in 1914.
In 1933 after a year studying philosophy
at the University of Bucharest
he enrolled in the Politecnico
in Milan as an architecture student.

The precision of architectural drafting
taught him the potential
of a spare two-dimensional line
to describe a complex three-dimensional form.

During the 1930s
Steinberg applied this lesson to the cartoons
he began publishing in Milan
for the twice-weekly satirical magazine Bertoldo.
The incisive wit of these images
would distinguish much of his art.

By 1940 Steinberg’s drawings were appearing
in Life magazine.

The following year
anti-Jewish racial laws in Fascist Italy
forced him to flee.

While in Santo Domingo in 1941
awaiting a US visa
he started publishing regularly in The New Yorker.

Throughout his long career
he used drawing to think about the semantics of art
reconfiguring stylistic signs into a new language
suited to the fabricated temper of modern life.
He was, the "inspector,"
seeing through every false front,
every pretense.

Sometimes with affection
sometimes with irony
but always a virtuoso master

Saul Steinberg described
carefully the wrought masks
of 20th-century civilization

Ben Shahn - pittore e fotografo

Ben Shahn (Kovno, 12 settembre 1898 – New York, 14 marzo 1969)

Shahn raggiunse nelle sue opere

My dear Lucien,
...Remember that I have the temperament of a peasant,
I am melancholy, harsh and savage in my works,
it is only in the long run that I can expect to please,

and then only those who have a grain of indulgence;
but the eye of the passerby is too hasty and sees only the surface.
Whoever is in a hurry will not stop for me.
..........................................
There is not more time for amusements,
you are right, education is what is necessary.
See, then, how stupid the bourgeoisie,
the real bourgeoisie have become, step by step they go lower and lower,
in a word they are losing all notion of beauty,
they are mistaken about everything.
Where there is something to admire
they shout it down,
they disapprove!
Where there are stupid sentimentalities
from which you want to turn with disgust,
they jump with joy or swoon.
Everything they have admired for the last fifty years
is now forgotten, old-fashioned, ridiculous.[...]
They are like the falling,
rolling rock which we must ceaselessly roll back in order to escape being crushed.

Jacob Kahn - 1884 - 1983 - An old and famous artist.

When younger he abandoned the religion
with which he grew up
in order to pursue his artwork.

He is fully and completely an artist.
He is temperamental and feels
no moral attachments to anything but art
and sees a great purpose in producing art and artists.
-----------------------------------------------------

"I sculpt and paint to give permanence to my feelings
about how terrible this world truly is.
Nothing is real to me except my own feelings
as I seem them all around me
in my sculptures and paintings"
..............................
"....there was passion
in the time of the
Abstract Expressionism
Now...there is greed and chaos
If the chaos were hot
I could create in it
But this cold is cold
with the touch of money..."

Chaim Potok

"Galleries glittered
like department stores.
A carnival of sorts.
Art as Mardi Gras.
The ordinary was king.
...popularism
shallowness
doubt
cynicism

The century was exhausted"

IF - by Rudyard Kipling

If you can keep your head when all about you
Are losing theirs and blaming it on you;
If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you,
But make allowance for their doubting too;
If you can wait and not be tired by waiting,
Or, being lied about, don't deal in lies,
Or, being hated, don't give way to hating,
And yet don't look too good, nor talk too wise;

If you can dream - and not make dreams your master;
If you can think - and not make thoughts your aim;
If you can meet with triumph and disaster
And treat those two imposters just the same;
If you can bear to hear the truth you've spoken
Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools,
Or watch the things you gave your life to broken,
And stoop and build 'em up with wornout tools;

-----------------------------------------------
If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue,
Or walk with kings - nor lose the common touch;
If neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you;
If all men count with you, but none too much;
If you can fill the unforgiving minute
With sixty seconds' worth of distance run -
Yours is the Earth and everything that's in it,
And - which is more - you'll be a Man my son!

Spazio non c'è fra voi e me. Mai.
A chi non sa vedere, non vuol capire,
può sembrare che l'assenza impallidisce
l'amore, eppure, l'assenza
stringe intensamente l'amore.
Può succedere!? ancora di più
e a gridi dico, si.
.............................
Assai piccola la mia casa,
strapiena la mia tana, e perché no?
Sono talmente impregnata
di voi che amo tanto, di voi,
amici miei che non siete più,
e voi altri che siete presenti
nella lontananza, assenti tutti
e nonostante il tempo, o la distanza
vi trovate vicino a me, perché allora
non riempire la mia solitudine,
colmare i miei muri dei vostri volti
per farmi ancora più compagnia?
e farvi serpeggiare intorno a me
comme des serpentines, lasciar
svolazzare e cadere i vostri sguardi
su di me, come dei coriandoli
nelle notti di carnevale a Rio de Janeiro?

Voi siete la mia vita.

frammento Emily Dickinson - inviato da Flavia

Rimane oziosa l'anima
..................................
E vi chiede lavoro -
anche soltanto di appuntare spilli
..................................
Per aiutare le sue mani vuote
